After Care following Root Canal Treatment

  • It is normal to some soreness or tenderness for a few days following your root canal treatment. Your jaw may also be sore from having held it wide open for a long time during the treatment. These symptoms will subside over the days following treatment but over the counter medication should be used as necessary; this is normally sufficient to alleviate the pain
  • If you experience severe pain or pressure that lasts more than the initial days, please contact us
  • Immediately after your treatment when your mouth is still numb, do not eat. This is really a precaution against accidently biting your tongue or cheek
  • Do not chew or bite on the treated tooth
  • Brush and floss as normal
  • If you have a temporary filling – some parts may wear away, this is normal – but if you think that the complete filling has come away, please contact us
  • Please get in touch if you develop any of the following symptoms:
o A swelling inside or outside your mouth
o An allergic reaction to any medication – like itching or a rash
o A return of your original symptoms
o If your bite feels uneven
  • Please read also the After Care following Fillings for some more aftercare information
A Root Canal is only one step in restoring your tooth to proper function. A final restoration of your tooth is extremely important to ensure that you retain the function of the tooth. Once the tooth has had a restoration, it can last as long as your natural teeth
